Nothing grabs bored kids and turns them into engaged learners faster than a great read aloud.
At Success Academy, Read Aloud is a key component of our THINK Literacy curriculum, and teachers strategically select and plan books that will push kids to think critically, articulate their ideas and debate—all while being immersed in a fascinating book.
But this isn’t enough!
We know that the number of books and the amount of time spent reading at home has a significant effect on kids’ academic achievement over the long term. The single most important thing parents can do to support their elementary school scholars is to read to them and with them at home.
That’s why we require parents of scholars in kindergarten through 2nd grade to read at least six picture books (or the equivalent time in chapter books) to kids every week.
Reading and discussing books with kids shouldn’t feel like a chore. It is one of the joys of both teaching and parenting and a shared experience that children will remember into adulthood.
