Why This Neighborhood:
At the great schools, demand far outpaces supply.
Families are flocking to Hell's Kitchen and the surrounding area. The signs are everywhere, from the construction along 11th Ave. to the to the extension of the 7 subway line. However, there are not enough high-quality public schools to meet the rapidly increasing demand.
We need more solutions to the overcrowding problem.
The pace of new school construction in Midtown West is not keeping up with the population boom. The top-performing public school in Hell's Kitchen already operates at 97% capacity. According to The Wall Street Journal, a new school building planned for the neighborhood “will likely be overcrowded upon its completion.”
Not every building, however, lacks space. The school facility on West 49th St. between 9th and 10th Avenues — where Success Academy Hell's Kitchen will open in August 2013 — has hundreds of seats opening up during the coming years. A desirable new school at this site will attract some families from the overcrowded zones, alleviating the incredible burden on those school communities.
Gifted and talented programs are excellent, but can be out of reach.
The number of children eligible for gifted and talented programs rose 20% compared to last year, and it’s 77% higher than in 2008. Many families simply cannot be accommodated. Parents need access to excellence and rigor even if children don’t get into these special programs.
For many, private schools are not an option.
For many of us, private school’s unaffordable and out of reach. Tuition is eclipsing $40,000 per year at many schools — simply not an option for many families. To guarantee a great education for our kids, parents shouldn’t have to choose between moving out of the city or paying private school tuitions.
More school choices mean less frenzy and anxiety.
The kindergarten admissions process can be confusing, time consuming, and incredibly anxiety provoking. Navigating the entrance tests and school interviews can seem like a full time job. Having another affordable option would make the process less stressful.
Parents in Hell's Kitchen deserve as many affordable options as possible.
Success Academy Hell's Kitchen, an excellent new neighborhood school, will open in August 2013. It is run by Success Academy Charter Schools, which runs some of the highest-performing schools in New York State.
