A Bounty of Books for Thanksgiving

No matter what the occasion, holidays afford us the opportunity to pause and reflect as well as to maintain meaningful cultural and family traditions. Incorporating special books into your family’s holiday traditions is a wonderful way to make meaning and memories together.

Thanksgiving, of course, is all about expressing our gratitude, and reading books about Thanksgiving and thankfulness encourages kids to focus on this essential part of the holiday.

“To be a human being is an honor, and we offer thanksgiving for all the gifts of life.” — from Giving Thanks

On our recommended book list, you will find books like Balloons Over Broadway, Thank You, Sarah, and Milly and the Macy’s Parade that focus on the history of Thanksgiving as an American holiday and include fascinating background information.

Younger children will love The Thankful Book, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?, and Just So Thankful, which approach gratitude from a joyous and childlike perspective.

Books like Giving Thanks and All the World are poetic reflections on the wonders of nature and the wider world. These are excellent choices to share with your entire family—grown ups included—year after year.

As for myself, I am grateful to live in a country with a vibrant children’s publishing industry and a free public library system. People living in many, many places in the world do not have access to children’s books—even if they do have a wealth of literature for adults. I am thankful that Success Academy invests—money, yes, but more importantly thought, energy and time—in books as powerful tools for education, personal growth and pleasure. And I am grateful for the leaders, teachers and families who bring this love of literature and value for books into their schools, classrooms and homes every day.

No matter which books you choose, we hope your home is a cornucopia of books this Thanksgiving.
