This year charter-school enrollment grew by 260,000 students nationwide. Most of the fastest-growing charter networks, including Success Academies in New York City, which I run, believe we have a responsibility both to push children to achieve their potential and to protect them from the mayhem that in district schools often robs students of their opportunity to learn.

Three years ago, when I was getting ready to enroll my son, Isaiah, in kindergarten, I took a close look at the schools in my neighborhood, and what I saw scared me.

Over the last week, we took the opportunity to research potential abuses that have occurred inside schools since the incident at Success Academy you so loudly trumpeted in the pages of the ​Times​. What we found were dozens of horrifying examples of misconduct ranging from direct physical abuse of a special-needs child, to inappropriate touching of young girls, to incredibly demeaning behavior toward kids.
