Last week, the city’s Panel for Education Policy approved seven charter school colocations, providing them space in public school buildings. That brings the total number of charter colocations okayed to 21 this year — double the average during the previous four years of the de Blasio administration. This increase is a welcome change, but the city could still be doing more to find room for charters.

But at Success Academy Hudson Yards in Manhattan, “queens” reign supreme. The charter school took home six trophies at the 15th Annual All-Girls Chess Championship in Chicago this past weekend.

A Success Academy girls chess team upset perennial juggernaut Stuyvesant HS at a Chicago tournament over the weekend to claim its first national championship. The charter network also crowned its first ever individual national champion as Nura Baalla, a sixth-grader at Success’ Hudson Yards location, won the under-12 division.

Success Academy students Emily Booncharoen and Pari Patni took home the top two spots for the K-6 championship division in New York State’s first ever Girls Chess Championship this past weekend. Their team, Success Academy Hudson Yards, placed first in the division.

More than four thousand Success Academy students from 24 elementary schools across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx gathered at Barclays Center Friday morning to celebrate their hard work and achievements ahead of state exams.

Over 4,000 Success Academy students from around New York City united at the Barclays Center for an unusual kind of pep rally. The rally was the sixth annual “Slam the Exam” event, in preparation for upcoming state exams.

A record 17,700 city students applied for seats in Success Academy charter schools in 2018, school officials said Wednesday. That’s up from roughly 17,000 students who applied last year to attend classes in the charter school network.
