At the Success Academy Bronx 2 Middle School, teachers identified 13 students who needed special education this school year. But the city’s Education Department only approved help for one of them. Success Academy, the city’s largest charter school network, is now alleging discrimination by the Education Department.

Success Academy unveiled a new turf soccer field at its Harlem North Central school on Thursday. Formerly an expanse of cracking cement, the play yard also features two full-length basketball courts and a playground. Nearly 1,000 children from Success Academy and P.S. 175 Henry H. Garnet, which shares the building on West 134th Street, will regularly play and train there.

Success Academy Cobble Hill and Digital Arts and Cinema Technology High School collaborated on their first annual art parade this week. The event featured over 300 SA students marching while showing off wearable art. Four students from Digital Arts and Cinema Technology High School, which shares a building with SA Cobble Hill, filmed the art parade — the latest example of an ongoing collaboration between the co-located schools.

When New York’s first round of Common Core state test results came out in 2013, student results plummeted across all schools, district and charter. Achievement First’s co-CEO Dacia Toll says “Common Core was like an earthquake and I’m standing over here in the rubble of my charter network and I look up.
