Celebrating our next
big leap

On Monday, April 25, 2022 we gathered together to celebrate our scholars, families, teachers, and champions who are redefining success each and every day. We announced our most ambitious plan to date – re-imagining K-12 education and building a landmark campus in the South Bronx – and one of the largest gifts in the history of public education from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Thank you to those who joined and all those who are supporting this historic evening on behalf of children. Together, we are showing the world what success can mean.

Honoree

Michael R. Bloomberg

Entrepreneur, philanthropist, three-term mayor of New York City

Elected mayor of New York in 2001, Bloomberg made education a top priority. His administration raised graduation rates to record highs, substantially increased teacher salaries, narrowed racial achievement gaps, and created over 600 new schools.

After leaving City Hall in 2013, he resumed leadership of Bloomberg LP, the data and media startup he founded in 1981. His foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, seeks to save and improve lives for the greatest number of people. He has given away $12.7 billion, including his most recent major commitment: $750 million to create 150,000 new seats in charter schools.

His support for his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, includes a $1.8 billion gift to financial aid – allowing the university to be permanently need-blind. Bloomberg also leads a coalition of 128 top colleges that have committed to enrolling and graduating more lower-income students.

Bloomberg earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

About Success Academy

Since its founding in 2006, Success Academy has created the highest-performing public school district in New York state, and a national model of access to excellence for children across all demographics. We currently enroll over 20,000 children in our 47 elementary, middle, and high schools. The majority of Success Academy scholars are children of color from low-income households in disadvantaged neighborhoods, admitted through a random public lottery. Our distinctive K-12 approach, designed as a holistic thirteen-year educational trajectory, leads to student outcomes that outpace even those in affluent suburban schools. To date, 100% of SA’s graduates have been accepted to college, many to highly selective institutions. Most are the first in their families to have the opportunity for higher education. We regularly share our groundbreaking curriculum and methods with educators and school leaders across the country. By scaling excellence and reigniting the civic mission of education, Success Academy is leading a movement to reinvent public education. All children can thrive and achieve in school, in college, and in life — Success Academy students and teachers prove it every day.
