2017 Results

For the ninth consecutive year, Success Academy Charter Schools have scored among the highest-performing schools in New York State. Among the 5,821 scholars who were age-eligible to take the tests, 95% were proficient in math and 84% proficient in ELA. In both subjects, students with disabilities and English Language Learners at Success Academy schools not only surpassed their peers statewide, but also outperformed students without disabilities and native English speakers, respectively, across New York.

Success Academy’s closest peers are the state’s richest school districts like Jericho, Syosset, and Scarsdale. If Success Academy were its own school district, it would rank No. 1 in the state, outperforming the second highest by 10 percentage points in math and 3 percentage points in ELA. This achievement is all the more significant, given that 73% of Success Academy’s testing students are economically disadvantaged.

Scholar Achievements

While we celebrate our scholars’ academic achievements on these exams, Success Academy does not consider test scores the only measure of a child’s education. Our focus is on developing the whole child. From chess and debate tournament wins, art shows and dance performances, to the look of joy on the face of a child who finally understands how to divide fractions, or makes a new friend, we celebrate the many scholar accomplishments throughout each year. We strive to make our schools joyful places of learning, where the pace is fast, the bar is high, and boredom is banished.

  • Science Exploratorium

This year Success Academy launched an innovative take on the science fair called the Science Exploratorium. Each middle school scholar was responsible for designing and conducting experiments from start to finish, thinking through the organization of their data, and creating a final presentation. Scholars made their own lotion, rock candy, quarantine chambers, irrigation systems, and more!

  • Festival of the Performing Arts

In February 2017, hundreds of Success Academy families gathered at SA Union Square to watch scholars from all 41 Success Academy schools sing and dance the night away at the annual network-wide Festival of the Performing Arts.

  • Winter Opportunity Academy

Winter Opportunity Academy is a special three-week seminar designed by HSLA's faculty to help scholars discover new passions and interests. WOA is modeled after the mini-semester built into many college calendars, a short winter term that offers undergraduates a change of pace from their regular classes with courses that push them outside their comfort zones and reenergize them for the spring term.

  • Debating on Capitol Hill

Students at Success Academy begin competing in debate tournaments as early as fifth grade. This year, nine scholars from SA Harlem East traveled to Washington D.C., where they met with members of Congress, toured the U.S. Capitol Building, and put on a debate showcase before an audience that included members of Congress, staffers, and education policy experts.

  • Chess Supernationals

We are passionate about chess at Success Academy! In May 2017, 136 scholars representing 16 Success Academy schools travelled to Nashville, Tennessee, for the United States Chess Federation’s Chess SuperNationals VI. Our scholars challenged top chess players from around the country, and several teams saw big successes on the national stage.

  • College Board Recognizes High School of the Liberal Arts Scholars

The College Board hosted Success Academy High School of the Liberal Arts juniors at their office to recognize their outstanding SAT scores.

  • Field Studies

Through our frequent, hands-on field studies, scholars discover New York and all our great city has to offer. The Whitney Museum of American Art, Sotheby’s and the New York Transit Museum are just a few of the venues our scholars visited this year.

  • Peter Pan

Success Academy Williamsburg performed its first ever musical, Peter Pan! After five months of rehearsals, over 50 scholars acted, sang, and danced to transport the audience to “Never Never Land.”

  • Ringing the Closing Bell at the NYSE

After studying finance in their financial markets elective course, scholars from Success Academy Bed Stuy Middle School visited the New York Stock Exchange and rang the closing bell!

  • Visual Arts Showcase

Success Academy hosted the Visual Arts Showcase at White Space Chelsea during the 2016-2017 school year. The best scholar artwork from all Success Academy schools was displayed. This was a wonderful opportunity for our scholars to showcase their exceptional creativity to friends and family!
