2017 Results

For the ninth consecutive year, Success Academy Charter Schools have scored among the highest-performing schools in New York State. Among the 5,821 scholars who were age-eligible to take the tests, 95% were proficient in math and 84% proficient in ELA. In both subjects, students with disabilities and English Language Learners at Success Academy schools not only surpassed their peers statewide, but also outperformed students without disabilities and native English speakers, respectively, across New York.

Success Academy’s closest peers are the state’s richest school districts like Jericho, Syosset, and Scarsdale. If Success Academy were its own school district, it would rank No. 1 in the state, outperforming the second highest by 10 percentage points in math and 3 percentage points in ELA. This achievement is all the more significant, given that 73% of Success Academy’s testing students are economically disadvantaged.

Scholar Achievements

While we celebrate our scholars’ academic achievements on these exams, Success Academy does not consider test scores the only measure of a child’s education. Our focus is on developing the whole child. From chess and debate tournament wins, art shows and dance performances, to the look of joy on the face of a child who finally understands how to divide fractions, or makes a new friend, we celebrate the many scholar accomplishments throughout each year. We strive to make our schools joyful places of learning, where the pace is fast, the bar is high, and boredom is banished.

  • Science Exploratorium

The Science Exploratorium, a showcase of self-driven, inquiry-based projects, empowers scholars to put science and engineering into action. During the four-week stretch between Thanksgiving and Winter Recess, science classrooms across Success Academy middle schools are transformed into laboratories, middle school scholars into scientists, and teachers into research directors.

  • Dunamis Super Meet

In February, fifteen Success Academy scholars boarded a plane to Atlanta, Georgia, to participate in one of the most competitive track meets of the indoor track and field season: the Dunamis Super Meet. Our girls’ 4x200m relay team medaled and set a new school record and season personal best time of 1:46.8, taking fifth place overall.

  • Festival of the Performing Arts

In February, hundreds of Success Academy families gathered at SA Union Square to watch scholars from across the network sing and dance the night away at the annual network-wide Performing Arts Showcase. Students rehearsed their pieces for over two months — scholars at SA Harlem North West even voluntarily gave up their recess period to get the piece just right.

  • Debate Tournament of Champions

Students at Success Academy begin competing in debate tournaments as early as fifth grade. This year, two of our high school debaters, sophomore Tajaih Robinson and senior Aida Bathily, travelled to Kentucky to compete in the Tournament of Champions, the most competitive debate tournament in the country. In an extraordinary accomplishment, both of them reached the quarter finals of the Lincoln Douglas (LD) section. Even more exciting, Tajaih made history, becoming the youngest African-American male ever to make it that far in the LD section of the tournament.

  • The Super Bowl of Chess

We are passionate about chess at Success Academy! In May 2018, 106 scholars representing 14 Success Academy schools travelled to Nashville, Tennessee, for what is considered the Super Bowl of scholastic chess: the National Elementary School Championships. Our scholars challenged top chess players from around the country, and several teams achieved big successes on the national stage.

  • 100% College Acceptance

On Thursday, June 7, 2018, our very first class of high school seniors graduated. One hundred percent of them are of them are college-bound, many with full scholarships. Institutional and federal aid awarded totals nearly $2 million for the coming year.

  • Field Studies

Through our frequent, hands-on field studies, scholars discover New York and all our great city has to offer. The Whitney Museum of American Art, Sotheby’s and the New York Transit Museum are just a few of the venues our scholars visited this year.
