Success Academy, a network of free public charter schools, welcomed Judit Polgar, the best woman chess player in history, in an effort to incorporate chess into the school curriculum. The grandmaster coached 40 students from Success Academy Charter Schools at the historic Marshall Chess Club, where chess champions like Brooklynite Bobby Fischer and Fabiano Caruana have played.

When a fire forced fifth grader Alex Seegars and his 90-year-old grandmother from their apartment in March, they lost their home and most of their possessions.

But one call to Matthew Seymour, the community relations manager at Success Academy Harlem East, started a wave of assistance and support that helped the family through a rough ordeal and allowed young Alex to continue his studies.
