Thank You For Teaching With Love and Patience — You Deserve an Award

Good Morning Ms. Haynes,

I am one of the many parents who are in full support of Success Academy and its teachers.

I remember my daughter Kelly at the beginning of the school year forgetting to put her homework folder in her bag a couple of times. And Kelly told me about the conversation Ms. B had with her about being more responsible. Kelly is very sensitive but Ms. B spoke with her in a way that didn’t scare her but instead made her remember that it was ultimately her responsibility to be prepared, not anyone else’s.

The same with Kieran. We’ve had a hard year getting Kieran to stop and think. Ms. Shenker and Ms. Volpe should be awarded a certificate of patience. They have their talks with Kieran and so far Kieran gets it. Every meeting we’ve had they have always showed Kieran and myself just how much they care without making Kieran feel inadequate or less than.

In other words, Ms. Haynes, I didn’t grow up with teachers like this. I had my hair pulled for not speaking loud enough. And was given the paddle for not reciting the multiplication table correctly. I learned out of fear not because I loved school or learning. Your teachers are exceptional and it shows when the students run down the block to be the first to get to school. And at pick-up time, none of them are rushing to leave.

It’s unfortunate what happened to the student at SA Cobble Hill. And I hope that it never happens again. It is not easy being a teacher — I could not handle it. But your staff does,  and I fully support SA Upper West, all of the other schools, and I especially support the teachers.
