Why I Rally: A Future for Kids in Queens

Dear Success Academy Families,

A year ago, more than 18,000 people, including many of you, rallied in Brooklyn to demand educational equality in New York City. This year, public charter school families and staff will again come together to march and make our voices heard on Wednesday, September 28.

I will never forget my first rally.

It was my job to make sure that our entire school community at SA Springfield Gardens made it to the rally. This was far from an easy task. Our families in Queens have to travel much farther than most families for these events and have to juggle many obligations. I was so proud to see our families show up.

And show up they did! Despite waking up earlier than everyone else and traveling together on the bus, they were fired up and ready to represent Queens. We marched across the Brooklyn Bridge together chanting and making our voices heard.

This is especially important in Springfield Gardens, where we don’t yet have a Success Academy middle school. Families here are asking: What will happen to our scholars when they have to leave our wonderful elementary school? Why doesn’t my sister, my neighbor, my friend get access to this great opportunity we have?

Families here are asking: What will happen to our scholars when they have to leave our wonderful elementary school?

We need answers to these questions. We need to urge our elected officials to stand with public charter schools and ensure there is a seat for every child who wants one. I can’t wait to join you and the entire Success Academy family to make a difference and march together on Wednesday, September 28.

Sincerely,

Amanda Hladky
