SUCCESS ACADEMY CROWN HEIGHTS AND P.S. 161 JOIN FORCES TO CELEBRATE SAFE, JOYFUL NEW PLAYGROUND

Ribbon Cutting for Newly Renovated Outdoor Space Obtained via Joint Advocacy by Charter School and District School

New York, NY, November 18, 2022 — Success Academy and P.S. 161 parents, students, and educators gathered to celebrate the opening of a brand new playground at Success Academy Crown Heights and P.S. 161 in a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.

.

“We’re so pleased to have this wonderful outdoor play area here at Success Academy Crown Heights, where we have been educating elementary school scholars for almost 10 years,” said Founder and CEO Eva Moskowitz. “We’re grateful to Commissioner Cumbo, Mayor Adams, and the City Council, as well as to P.S. 161 for their partnership in securing this funding.”

“We have a tight-knit community here in Crown Heights. We are so fortunate to have a partnership between our schools where kids are at the heart of every decision,” said Steven Madan, Principal of SA Crown Heights. Madan counseled the students to have fun and be kids, saying, “The memories you make on this yard will help shape the person you become.”

The playground, located at 330 Crown Street, Brooklyn, includes a new soccer field, half court basketball area, and a ropes course — totalling approximately 25,000 sq. ft.  Commissioner of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Cumbo, when she served as a Council Member, and Mayor Adams, when he served as Brooklyn Borough President, co-funded the project through the city’s Res-A initiative.  The school site is where both Chancellor Banks and Senator Myrie attended elementary school.

ABOUT SUCCESS ACADEMY

Since its founding in 2006, Success Academy has created the highest-performing public school district in New York state, and a national model of access to excellence for children across all demographics. We currently enroll over 20,000 children in 47 elementary, middle, and high schools. The majority of Success Academy scholars are children of color from low-income households in disadvantaged neighborhoods, admitted through a random public lottery. Our distinctive K-12 approach, designed as a holistic 13-year educational trajectory, leads to student outcomes that outpace even those in affluent suburban schools. To date, 100% of SA’s graduates have been accepted to college, many to highly selective institutions. Most are the first in their families to have the opportunity for higher education. We regularly share our curriculum and methods with educators and school leaders across the country. By scaling excellence and reigniting the civic mission of education, Success Academy is leading a movement to reinvent public education.
