Seniors Make an Extraordinary Impact — in Academics, Co-Curriculars, and Giving Back — Despite Half of their High School Experience Taking Place during a Pandemic

New York, NY, June 9, 2022 — Success Academy High School of the Liberal Arts graduated 117 seniors yesterday — 100% of them accepted to a four-year college and with 96% receiving at least one acceptance offer that would meet their full financial need. Since its first senior class graduated in 2018, this is the fifth class to attain 100% college acceptance.

Sixty-nine percent were accepted to selective colleges and universities, including Yale, Emory, University of Pennsylvania, Rice, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Southern California, Swarthmore, and Haverford. This class includes SA’s first graduates at Brown, Smith, Trinity, the University of Virginia, and SUNY Geneseo. Over half of the class will be first-generation college graduates.

“Success Academy has given you the tools to transform yourselves into leaders, and the world needs you,” said Congressman Ritchie Torres, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives. “Today belongs to your family as much as to you — they fought to make sure you had a great education.”

“Graduates, you have gone from sitting on the dot rug to 100% college acceptance,” said speaker Nick Simmons, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education. “You truly have the ‘secret sauce’ — initiative, perseverance, compassion, and the ability to pursue your passions. As you go out into the world, our hope is that you’ll see yourselves as we see you.”

Among the class’s many accomplishments:

  • Two-thirds conquered the advanced curriculum of SA’s Honors STEM or Honors Humanities academies;
  • Nineteen were named Rales Scholars for their outstanding achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service throughout high school;
  • During their senior year, six took college courses at Columbia University, including general chemistry, introduction to statistical reasoning, neural plasticity, and calculus II; and
  • During their junior year, eight took college courses at NYU, on data science, evolution, statistics, and physics.

Students in the class also founded some of the most popular and impactful student groups in SA-HSLA’s history, including ones focused on tutoring, social issues, mental health challenges, and peer mentoring, while participating in dance and musical performances and art shows; winning state and national competitions in dance, chess, debate, and track; and starting successful businesses in fashion, beauty, art, and music.

“This class tackled challenging academics, participated fully in co-curriculars, started businesses, and founded clubs focused on social-emotional learning and gave back to their community,” said Eva Moskowitz, Founder and CEO of Success Academy. “We couldn’t be prouder of what they have accomplished — and can’t wait to see what they do next!”

About Success Academy

Since its founding in 2006, Success Academy has created the highest-performing public school district in New York state, and a national model of access to excellence for children across all demographics. We currently enroll over 20,000 children in our 47 elementary, middle, and high schools. The majority of Success Academy scholars are children of color from low-income households in disadvantaged neighborhoods, admitted through a random public lottery. Our distinctive K-12 approach, designed as a holistic thirteen-year educational trajectory, leads to student outcomes that outpace even those in affluent suburban schools. To date, 100% of SA’s graduates have been accepted to college, many to highly selective institutions. Most are the first in their families to have the opportunity for higher education. We regularly share our groundbreaking curriculum and methods with educators and school leaders across the country. By scaling excellence and reigniting the civic mission of education, Success Academy is leading a movement to reinvent public education. All children can thrive and achieve in school, in college, and in life — Success Academy students and teachers prove it every day.
