SUCCESS ACADEMY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS COMMITTEE HOSTS “ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN S|A FIFTH GRADER?”

300 Competitors Challenge Themselves with SA’s Actual 5th Grade Curriculum And Raise Needed Funds for SA Graduates

New York, NY, March 1, 2022 — Success Academy’s Young Professionals Committee will host an evening of academic trivia based on SA’s actual fifth grade curriculum — challenging even for adults! — to raise money for The Launch Fund, which provides long-term financial support to SA scholars after they graduate.

What:

Teams of young professionals will attempt to answer questions based on SA’s challenging fifth grade curriculum, such as:

  • If the Earth took less time to revolve around the Sun, how would the duration of a year, the seasons, and a day be impacted?

  • What is the name given to the period in which humans transitioned from nomadic hunters and gatherers to agricultural based settlements?

  • How many squares with side length 0.01 centimeters can fit inside a larger square with side length 1 centimeter?

  • Which part of speech must an appositive word or phrase contain?

Why:

Up to 40% of students who have been accepted to college — especially first generation college students from low-income households — fail to show up in the fall after their high school graduation, as costs including textbooks, transportation to campus, dorm supplies, etc. are prohibitively overwhelming. Researchers have coined the term “summer melt” to describe this population of college-intending students who fail to transition successfully to college.

Who:

The SA Young Professionals Committee (“YPC”) is a dedicated group of emerging young leaders in New York City who are ambassadors of Success Academy and advocates of education reform.  The Committee raises money for The Launch Fund, which provides financial support — including assistance in covering unforeseen costs — to SA seniors and alumni as they navigate higher education, from the transition to college to graduation.

When:

Thursday, March 3, 2022, 7:30-10:30 p.m.

Where:

(Le) Poisson Rouge

58 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012

About Success Academy

Since its founding in 2006, Success Academy has created the highest-performing public school district in New York state, and a national model of access to excellence for children across all demographics. We currently enroll over 20,000 children in our 47 elementary, middle, and high schools. The majority of Success Academy scholars are children of color from low-income households in disadvantaged neighborhoods, admitted through a random public lottery. Our distinctive K-12 approach, designed as a holistic thirteen-year educational trajectory, leads to student outcomes that outpace even those in affluent suburban schools. To date, 100% of SA’s graduates have been accepted to college, many to highly selective institutions. Most are the first in their families to have the opportunity for higher education. We regularly share our groundbreaking curriculum and methods with educators and school leaders across the country. By scaling excellence and reigniting the civic mission of education, Success Academy is leading a movement to reinvent public education. All children can thrive and achieve in school, in college, and in life — Success Academy students and teachers prove it every day.
