Mission Possible

Stories and insights on excellent education.

Sixteen Success Academy scholars took on some of the nation’s toughest chess competition at the Junior High Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this month. They tested their skills and stayed focused over seven rounds. Sean O’Hanlon, SA senior manager of chess, noted that our scholars demonstrated high levels of effort and fortitude — even under intense pressure during particularly long rounds.

Success fielded three teams in the Championships sections — where the most competitive scholastic chess in the country is played. Class prizes went to SA Bed-Stuy seventh-grader Geah Jean Baptiste, fellow seventh-grader Geordany Solomon, and SA Bronx 1 seventh-grader Quinlan Alday who had the best scores of any player in their rating class.

Of the 46 teams participating in the K-8 Championship, SA Bed-Stuy Middle School placed thirteenth and SA Harlem East placed seventeenth. SA Bronx 1 placed seventh out of the 13 teams competing in the K-9 Championship.

Congratulations to all our competitors, listed below, who earned the chance to challenge themselves in this championship!
