A Most Determined Scholar

Today, students across New York will begin this year’s state math test, and I cannot wait to see what every scholar at Success Academy will accomplish! Our scholars are walking into these exams confident and well-prepared, ready to show how much they know and how far they have come this year. They know that what matters most is not the score they get, but the effort they show and the real sense of accomplishment that comes with knowing they did their best! Determination counts for a lot — and one scholar in particular knows this lesson well. A few months ago, Wuraola, who is in sixth grade, sent this email to me and her math teacher after taking a math test:

Subject: BOOK 3 HERE I COME

Good evening, I just wanted to let you know that things are going to change tomorrow. I missed two easy points that I could have gotten and I am extremely disappointed in myself for that. But I am not gonna let that stop me. Tomorrow is a new day and a fresh start. I know book three is hard but I am gonna try my best and try to push my two to a three or a four. I am going to have a good dinner and sleep and do some review, and tomorrow I am going to wake up and say I am a rockstar three times and get myself pumped. I will come in with a smile on my face knowing that I have one more chance to take away that two, and change that 15% into a 50% and more for my team. I am confident and ready to tackle tomorrow’s test. If you both have any tips for me, due to book three, I would love to hear them and implement them for tomorrow. I am ready to SLAM THE EXAM.

Love,

Wuraola, the most determined scholar in the world

I think this email speaks for itself! Our scholars truly are amazing! Because of the work that teachers do every day and the support from their parents, our scholars are developing the grit and determination needed to overcome any challenge. I would say good luck, Wuraola. But I know you won’t need it!
